2010 Race Schedule & Dreaming About Racing

I've started thinking about which races to do, where we want to travel this year and trying to find the money to make it all work. I am getting excited about the year.

Maybe I've been thinking about it too much. You know the dreams you have where you can't run, or you run in slow motion and it takes every bit of effort you have? I had a dream last night that we started a race, hit this long singletrack climb, my front shifter pod bolt broke, this slow motion thing set in and I was dropped. Then two of us kept getting lost due to horrible course markings on a race course that not only went through a large venue of small shops, but actually went through the shops and restaurants which were full of people who didn't know there was a race going on. After the millionth wrong turn I remember going down one of the gift shop hallways and dead-ending at the bathrooms. To top it all off I forgot to remove my winter jacket and was carrying a hydration pack and two-way radio, all of which I had meant to take off before the race. Anyone care to analyze this?

The AZ Trail Jamboree was an awesome event, complete with a shuttle to the starting point, a BBQ after and a thank you tile.

Chad's pictures and post here.  Scott's post here.  These guys take the best pictures. Scott's post includes pictures from Friday evening's ride with Todd, they did Milagrosa while I just rode up Mt Lemmon and took the camera phone sunset pictures below.

Nick Update:

Looks like he made it through Las Cruces, NM. You can see where the SPOT batteries died for a couple days. Since he plans his route as he goes he ended up on a dirt road for a long while in there somewhere, I'm still waiting on that story.

Nick Kindt, you have been SPOTed

 Cass and her pink muffs

Cass Perkins, a friend and fellow pro racer, now cycling coach at Warren-Wilson College, decided to spend her holiday break in Florida getting a private pilot's license!

Her boyfriend Nick, not to be out-done, packed his bike for a touring trip and bought a one-way ticket to LA, CA. The plan is to ride back to North Carolina, or to see how far he can get, while visiting everything of interest in his path.  Nick has been enjoying his what I would call "off-the-grid" experience sending the occasional email out to friends and family, using maps (no GPS), turning his cell off, making plans day by day, etc.

His mistake was letting us know he was coming through Tucson. He made it to the outskirts of town where Todd met him, a little further in Scott was the 2nd of the welcome crew and I joined them for the last 30 minutes.

 Taking a shortcut

Now, thanks to Scott at TopoFusion, Nick has his own SPOT page.

So although Nick may not know where he is, the rest of us will!

No sooner had Nick turned on the SPOT he got a call from Matt Lee who had seen Nick pop up on the map. After a day or two of bike repairs and some side trip riding he'll hit the road again.  If anyone wants to offer route advice or a couch to crash on, send me an email:, I'm sure he'd appreciate it.
